Sensory Garden Project

2019
Many of you have probably noticed the plain brown fence running across the back of the residents' garden, just off the dining area. Always top of mind for FoT are ways in which to enhance the lives of our residents. Our first projext was to provide a backdrop that would create a stimulating visual in place of the "brownness" of the existing fence.
Primarily, the visual needed to be appropriate for people with dementia, but we also wanted it to last. In this vein, we were advised by the Council to opt for removable murals. After finding an appropriate partner to help us realise this wonderful idea, we were thrilled with the results.
Below are the pictures that were selected and we're very happy to include photos of the process and the final product.

To provide some background to our decision to turn what could be aptly described as an uninviting patch of "non-garden" we felt compelled to create a sensory garden, the benefits of which are extensively described in various dementia related publications. In an attempt to realise our objectives, we started investigating various methods of raising funds...... we set up a Crowdfunder appeal which did not prove successful but after sending out many applications for grants, we managed to raise £15,000. Because we're probably going to need in the region of £25,000, we've decided to call Phase I the installation of a summerhouse that we'll use as an "Ice Cream Parlour" for our residents.

We've also managed to lay paving to accommodate walkers, wheelchairs and those residents with limited mobility. Click here to see more details about our project concept, the justification for a sensory garden and what we envisage garden to look like..... going forward. We feel it's worth mentioning again that once this area is fully utilised as a sensory garden..... it's likely that this may a "one of its kind" in a County home in the UK.
